I had a fascinating conversation with Aaron Tsai, VP of Marketing at Amaran, about Amaran’s recent launch as an independent brand. Amaran is a brand built by creators, for creators, and a commitment to this philosophy is evident throughout its catalog. In addition to the wide array of lenses available for L-mounts specifically, there’s a huge market of lenses that are compatible via adapters, including most lenses you might already have.
It shoots in a variety of resolutions and frame rates, including 5.7K 60fps for smooth slow motion and 4K 100fps for crazy cinematic slow-mo. Plus, it has a horizon lock to keep your videos level no matter what you're doing and an "invisible selfie stick" effect that makes it look like you're filming with a drone. The new model feels just as comfortable to use as Blackmagic's other cinema cameras. It might be a little bulky, but its chassis feels excellent whether you're holding it with one or two hands. The whole thing can be heavy, especially if you use it with Blackmagic's optional battery grip, but this is still my favorite design for everything from the studio to run-and-gun shoots.
